Memento ( Nolan , 2000, USA)

MEMENTO

Memento Sound Sound is used in the opening sequence. One technique is Non diegetic sound of the strings up until the camera flashes This is also an example of a score. The score of the strings builds up over the opening of the scene and creates tension and excitement this is a typical convention of a thriller. The score heightens the emotion of the scene. There are diegetic sounds of the camera noises and the polaroid being shaken , the man saying ‘What’ and the gun. This use of diegetic sound helps creates realism and tension in the opening.

Camerawork Most of the clip is of an extreme closeup of a Polaroid picture. The extreme closeup helps set out the story and hides information from anything else. Information is withheld and therefore the audience wants to know more and will ask questions. The close ups used also help create and intimate feeling to the scene and make the audience seem involved.

Mise En Scene The most important prop in the sequence is the polaroid picture. The camera focuses mainly on the picture for a large chunk of the sequence. The picture is of a dead man lying on the floor, the audience will ask questions such as who is the dead man? Who killed him etc. When it is revealed who the man that died is he is seen to be wearing glasses.Glasses are usually a symbol of weakness and vulnerability, this plays with the audiences emotions and helps them sympathise with a suspected innocent and weak dead man

Editing:The whole scene is in reverse however the audience does not know this right away. The fact that it’s in reverse helps create a surreal and odd experience for the audience. The Polaroid picture is in shot for a very long time , this suggests to the audience that the Polaroid picture plays an important part in the films narrative and story.
